College News 5th October 2018

Headteachers message - Friends of Lutterworth College

This week saw the first meeting following the summer break  of the Friends of Lutterworth College - FOLC. It was good to reflect on the summer's fundraising event - The Colour Run - and the fact that it raised £978 towards school facilities. A great start for this parental group on their first attempt at this type of activity, and to raise funds for the College. With donations from parents via ParentPay and a grant from Magna Park the College has been able to purchase 8 outdoor benches for the paved area near the ATP.

Next on the fundraising agenda is a Chritmas Quiz - to be held at the school on Friday 7th December. Tickets will be out soon at £5 pp which will include food. The bar will be open on what we plan to be a great night for parents and staff - so please put the date in your diary.

Looking further ahead, the Lutterworth College Colour Run in 2019 will be on Saturday 6th July - so, if you missed the fun last year be sure to put this date in your diary as well.

If you are interested as a parent in supporting the College and joining Friends of Lutterworth College our next meeting is Wednesday 7th November at 6pm in the E- Learning Centre. Drop Michelle Hadley a line at m.hadley@lutterworthcollege.com if you intend to come along (we can then order the right amount of refreshments).

Have a lovely weekend

This week's assemblies and choosing a biblical story to represent our school

In this weeks assemblies students were given an opportunity to choose a biblical story (from four) to represent our school. After some dramatic retelling of the stories by Mr Thomas the results are in as follows:

Year 7: The Good Samaritan

Year 8: David and Goliath

Year 9: The Good Samaritan

Year 10: Noah & The Ark

Year 11: The Good Samaritan

Unfortunately, Jonah & The Whale did not muster any first places.

So, The Good Samaritan with its themes of helping others, tolerance and anti-discrimination received the most votes and will be the biblical story that represents our school.

Year 7 and 8 Monthly Geography Photo Competition

August 2018 saw the launch of the geography department monthly photography competition for all Year 7 and Year 8 pupils. This is an opportunity for these pupils to show off not only their camera skills, but also their geography knowledge as they photograph the world around them and caption their shots with comments as to why they find their photograph interesting.

Over 40 entries have been received so far, with Abigail Earp in 8T8 winning August’s competition for her photograph and accompanying caption which demonstrated not only a keen eye for the landscape of the Peak District, but also excellent geographical knowledge of the processes of erosion which have shaped this area of the UK.

The standard of photography has been truly amazing, making the task of picking a winner incredibly difficult. Thankfully the Year 7 Open Evening gave us the opportunity to hold a public vote for the September winner, and we are pleased to report that after counting the votes, Megan Ward from 8T9 was chosen as the winner for her photograph of Bradgate Park.

A selection of photographs from August and September have been included to demonstrate the quality of the entries to date. We look forward to receiving more interesting and exciting images throughout the year.

Year 13 Geographers- Lake District (Carbon and Water)

On Monday 1st October Mrs Alderman and Mr Hill took the Year 13 geographers to Stanage Edge in the Peak District to enhance their understanding of the water and carbon cycles. The weather was very kind to us with glorious sunny skies, although plenty of layers were needed to protect from the wind. The students examined the biodiversity and physical conditions that exist in two contrasting areas and established the key criteria for peat bogs to thrive, a vital part of regulating the water and carbon cycles.

The Peak District Leader was very complimentary of our students and their attitude, commenting on how much he enjoyed their company and how it had been a pleasure working with them.
