At Lutterworth College we understand that maths has a very special place in education. We have developed a smooth pathway threading through all five years with plenty of scope for all pupils to achieve their full potential. Our proven successful stage-not-age scheme ensures that at all times pupils learning provides enough stretch from their current standard and breaks that progress down into manageable chunks (typically units of work that last for 3-4 weeks).

 

All students continue to build on the excellent foundations of our Primary Schools. They will develop their  skills in six strands:

  • number,
  • geometry,
  • algebra,
  • ratio and proportion,
  • probability and
  • statistics.

 

We also emphasise reasoning (30-40%) and problem solving (20-30%) in addition to procedural fluency (40-50%)

Throughout these topics we have weaved fascinating non-curricular enrichment aimed at fostering and promoting a love of mathematics - From computational basics like counting in binary, through to psychological modelling and game theory, to discovering ancient number systems and how they shaped the modern world (just why is time and the circle based around the number 60?!?). Although these topics may not be assessed directly - it is our hope that understanding the role of mathematics as the platform from which to launch into a multitude of different fields will make maths more enjoyable, more satisfying, and ultimately make us more effective thinkers.

Students are set at the beginning of year 7 and assessed half termly, with big exams simulating GCSE at the end of each academic year. Pupils may (and often do) move between sets or change between two tiers of Higher (4-9) and Foundation (1 -5) as we approach GCSE. Current OFQUAL guidance suggests that pupils should only be entered for Higher if they are reasonably expected to achieve a grade 6 - this mirrors our experience and is our current standard for entering exams.

 

Frequently Asked Questions

What's all this I hear about retakes?

The numeracy skills developed in Mathematics are vital in the modern world.  All employers want young people to have a qualification (ideally at least a grade 5) in Mathematics. Failure to achieve a grade 4 leads to most post-16 providers entering pupils for retakes in subsequent years. This continues until 18 - but is also a priority for universities (such as local DMU - who will continue to support you until you graduate or receive a grade 4!)

 How is it assessed?

You will be assessed at one of two levels:

  • Higher - covering Grades 9 - 4
  • Foundation - covering Grades 5 - 1

There is no assessed coursework.

Students will be studying a linear course and will sit examinations in May/June of year 11. There are three exams, each 1 hour and 30 minutes. Paper 1 is non-calculator whilst the other two  require the use of a scientific calculator. The papers are equally weighted i.e. each paper is worth one third of the total marks.  Throughout the course you will take internal tests to monitor your progress though these do not form part of your final grade.

What if  I'm particularly good at maths, or if I struggle to access GCSE content, what are the options for me?

We teach this after school in years 10 and 11. It stands apart from your "Core" Maths GCSE but it's much harder -think of GCSE Further Maths as being like a GCSE in grades 7-12! 

And if you struggle - well that's okay too, we may enter you for functional skills/entry level alongside your GCSE (which focuses on topics like time and timetables, money, unit conversions/dilutions and speed/distance/time). Our aim is to ensure every pupil leaves with the right qualification for them.

Progression Opportunities

A-levels in a variety of subjects require a minimum of grade 5 in maths, and many post-16 colleges require at least grade 4.

A wide variety of courses involving Mathematics are offered in the Sixth Form (see below)

6TH FORM OPTIONS

What will I study? 

You will study Pure Mathematics, Statistics and Mechanics over the two years with an option to sit AS Mathematics at the end of year 12 (although this will not count towards your final A level grade).  The A level examination will be taken at the end of year 13 and consists of two Pure Mathematics papers and one for the Statistics and Mechanics.    The papers are equally weighted.  Pure Mathematics will extend students’ existing skills in Algebra and Trigonometry and introduce and develop Calculus, Proof and Vectors.  Students will learn about statistical sampling, data presentation and interpretation, probability, statistical distributions and hypothesis testing, alongside kinematics, forces and Newton’s laws and moments.

The aim of the course is to develop understanding of mathematics and mathematical processes in a way that promotes confidence; develops abilities to reason logically and extends the range of mathematical skills and techniques and uses them in more difficult, unstructured problems providing a strong foundation for progress to further study.

Where will this course take me?

A Level Mathematics is good for just about everything!  People with Mathematics qualifications can go into: Accountancy, Medicine, Engineering, Forensic Pathology, Finance, Business and Economics, Consultancy, Teaching, IT, Games Development, Scientific Research, Programming, Civil Service, Design, Construction, Astrophysics, Risk Analyst, Software Engineer, Meteorologist, Tax Lawyer, Defense Analyst, Environmental protection.  Mathematics is seen by universities as a facilitating subject which means that it will help you to study lots of other subjects and pursue lots of different careers.  Mathematics is recommended, and sometimes required, for: Computer Science, Accounting, Chemistry, Biology and Life Sciences, Medicine/Nursing, Dentistry, Business Studies, Management Studies, Finance, Architecture, Geology, Psychology, Surveying and even Philosophy.  Mathematics is also crucial for studying advanced apprenticeships in Accountancy and Technology and Engineering subjects.     

Entry requirements:

Grade 7 at GCSE in Mathematics is a minimum requirement.  Grade 6 students may be considered if they are very close to the Grade 7 boundary and are highly recommended by their GCSE teacher.

What will I study? 

You will study A2 Mathematics with three examinations taken at the end of year 12 and will carry on to study A level Further Mathematics with four examinations at the end of year 13.  The examinations in each year are equally weighted.  This counts as ONE A level choice and you DO NOT opt for AS/A2 Mathematics, it is included in the course.  As well as the topics covered in A level Mathematics, students will cover proof, algebra and functions, calculus and vectors in more depth and will be introduced to matrices, complex numbers, polar coordinates and differential equations which are vital in many STEM degrees.  Students will also deepen their knowledge of applied mathematics.  Students who take Further Mathematics enjoy mathematics and the challenge it provides.

Where will this course take me?

Further Mathematics qualifications are highly regarded and welcomed by universities.  Students who take Further Mathematics are really demonstrating a strong commitment to their studies, as well as learning mathematics that is very useful for any mathematically rich degree.  Some prestigious university courses require you to have a Further Mathematics qualification and others may adjust their grade requirements more favourably to students with Further Mathematics.  Further Mathematics may be required for degrees in Engineering, Sciences, Computing, Finance/Economics and Mathematics itself.  Students who study Further Mathematics can go on to careers in: Actuarial Science/ Studies; Aeronautical Engineering; Biochemistry; Biomedical Sciences; Chemical Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Medicine; Optometry; Physics and Veterinary Science.
